Facebook Compromises the Jewish Identity

In an unprecedented step, the Tech Giant Facebook, also known as Meta, has decided to censor the word “Zionist” on their Social Media Network when used as a ‘hate proxy’ for the Jewish people. In their updated policy statement, Meta wrote, “We consulted with external experts to understand better how people use the word “Zionist” and the circumstances under which it may serve as a proxy for Jewish or Israeli people on our platforms.” From the outset, this policy revision seems innocuous with no harmful intent. However, removing the layers of technical jargon reveals the true meaning of this seemingly innocent ‘protection.’

The goal of Zionists was to merge the identity of the ancient Jewish people and the modern atheistic Zionist movement as one.

From the very inception of Zionism, its leaders have declared themselves as the ‘Representative Body’ for the Jewish people. Since the tragic October 7 attacks, their false misrepresentations have been exceedingly dangerous as the war in Gaza is unfolding in tragic proportions. It is superbly convenient for Israel to curb criticism of their actions by deeming it as ‘antisemitism.’ However, in truth, many oppose the actions of Israel but have no ill feelings for the Jewish people. They, therefore, resort to using the term Zionist versus labeling the Jewish people as a whole.

This distinction is a colossal blow for the Zionist movement, for it cannot survive if it does not ride on our name. If the terms Zionist and Jew are understood to be two dichotomous entities as they indeed are, then the Israeli Government cannot freely resort to using the antisemitism ticket.

Conversely, for us Jews, it is perniciously dangerous to be associated with Israel, a foreign country over 6,000 miles away. Judaism is our religion. Not a nationality. This association not only undermines our religious identity but also puts us at risk of being unjustly targeted and harmed.

We implore the Meta team to reconsider their decision. Your platform has the power to shape public discourse and perceptions. We urge you to use this power responsibly and avoid compromising the safety of the people you want to protect. Your reconsideration of this policy would be a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the Jewish community.

We pray for the safety of all innocent people trapped in the volatile war, for the release of the hostages, and for final peace to reign amongst all the nations.
